Individuals who experienced abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope following their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Strict Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in spring, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and revisions to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate shared they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Multiple representatives of the coalition, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a female survivor victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own story and appeared "modest, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with experts and gathered documents that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the story ends - he valued that."
